- 1We order the pieces ourselves, usually four to six at a time, in the size the brand's own chart tells us to buy.
- 2Everything gets measured flat and then on the body: underbust, torso length, how far the gusset travels when both arms go up.
- 3Anything we recommend goes through three cold hand washes first. Lace that curls or elastic that ripples is disqualifying.
- 4The rest goes back. No brand sees a word before it publishes, and nobody pays for a placement. If we get fit advice wrong, we correct the page and say what changed.

- One piece, bust to hip, with a snap closure at the gusset. Think of it as a bodysuit that was designed to be seen rather than worn under a t-shirt. Lace, mesh and satin are the usual fabrics, and plenty of people sleep in theirs.

- Raise both arms. If the gusset climbs or the cups gape at the top edge, the torso length is wrong for you, not the size. Straps should adjust to roughly two fingers of slack. Nearly every brand we order from runs about half a size small.

- They are, once you stop buying graded-up straight-size patterns. What you want is a wider gusset, a real back closure or wide adjustable straps, and stretch lace with at least 15% elastane. We cover picks through 4X.

- Intent, mostly. A bodysuit is built to survive being pulled up and down under jeans, so the fabric is opaque and the snaps are reinforced. A teddy is sheerer, daintier and not really meant for an eight-hour day.
